I’m based in the UK, but interested in a perspective on this from beyond the UK as well. I’m creating a web site on which I would like to reproduce information from companies’ web sites. It’s only information which is "in the public domain", e.g. their company name, contact details, and pricing information, just gathered from their web sites. Obviously I wouldn’t expect to be able to copy logos or narrative from their sites.

I wouldn’t be in conflict at all – I would be looking to provide them with custom, rather than take it away.

What do you think? Thanks.

The company has the right not to permit you to use their information for the purposes of directing traffic to your website.
That’s why insurers are able to prevent certain price comparison websites from using their information.
The simple reproduction of locally available information is not – of itself – unlawful or challenge-able.
I assume you are not reproducing this information out of a sense of public-spirited helpfulness.

E.g Can an employer send updated terms, which include your home and work address, job title, salary etc, which could be used for Identity fraud, if intercepted, through normal post?

Banks send your statement through the normal post, name address account number it’s all there. Even if it’s TNT post the local postie still had it in his bag. It’s wrong but still legal. I question royal mails disregard for customer safety by hiring migrants from overseas. Every year hundreds are arrested for theft and fraud but it’s rarely admitted by royal mail because they work through agencies not royal mail directly.

That would pretty much be anything that might cause the company harm if released to competing firms (trade secrets, upcoming product developments, etc.), or that is otherwise deemed confidential by the company.

My fiance had an accident with her vehicle a year ago. She reported it to her insurance company, who handled the expenses, just as all insurance companies should.
Recently, the DMV suspended her driver’s license because she allegedly didn’t have insurance. She attempted to get the insurance company, who she had recently left, to give her the insurance policy information to prove that she did have insurance. But the agent on the phone said that the company does not have to release that information because she no longer has an open policy with them. And to get the information would require a subpoena. Is this agent correct?

If you fiance was a client of the insurance company when she had the accident, yes they can provide their client with the dates they were insured by them. It sounds like the former agent does not want to help because the person is not a client anymore.

Ask the agent for the name of the insurance company and write them directly.
If the agent does not want to cooperate, then I would report him your state’s Department of Insurance that licenses both agents and insurance companies.

Please provide a news article or law case (with a link).
Basically, employees watching youtube, facebook, porn, downloading, email etc… and somehow you get like virus and company infomation leaked out.

Would be different if you had asked about implications to you in a personal way but just simply asking us to find something where we would use a search engine the same thing you can do, I must agree with the Doctor on this one. Just Google it.
As it applied, (this is my attempt to answer the question you should’ve asked, please give credit if it helps), you may be interested from either side. I will tell you that the employee is liable and can be sued for any damages, proprietary information lost, cash, account info, you name it. Whatever was lost, and whatever must be fixed or changed is all on the employee en total.

If it is just a case where little damage ws caused even still a firing offense in my book and I did just that with an employee of mine before. One was searching for a new job on my time and computers and another was sending data to another company. They didn’t hide their tracks very well and I found them in minutes in the cache.

You will surely find plenty of cases to site if you need this for a class as well. Hope I helped in general even though I cannot spend time searching out what will be easy for you to find. Instead gave you info I thought you could use.

Good Care and luck,
Sean Masters

If a person ’sells’ property that doesn’t belong to them (in this case a company’s client list or other proprietary information), that is called THEFT and FRAUD. There’s been some long jail sentences handed to people for this type of crime.
