What family history services do you wish where out there besides just genealogical research/family tree making? What hourly rate could I expect to charge for this? By the hour or by the project? I charge $50 an hour for on sight genealogical research, but that is obviously not appropriate for this type of archiving work.

Back in 2004 I tried to do this and discussed it with people who were dedicated researchers in a group on the internet. They told me that first I’d have to become a certified professional researcher to have the credability (for people to trust that they could pay and receive the service, and to know that with this title bestowed that experience would be there) and that takes years of experience and a test and then continually paying to keep your membership. I said I wanted to charge $10 an hour and even though I thought that was ample they laughed at me because there is so much volunteer work out there and because lots of people consider it a hobby and something to keep themself busy. What people are looking for is usually research overseas, by some overseas researcher who belongs to a group of researchers who help each other with data, where to find that data, finding it for each other for a commission, or pulling old information and suggesting it’s just been located, or finding archives, churches and such. Lots of people have in the past started up websites on the internet and are well in place for that research. Generally overseas (for instance Poland) if you pay them $90, then they will provide to you perhaps 5 names. And if you go on a trip and meet them and they show you around you might be paying them $500 but they drive you, they pull the information which again is about $100 for 5 names, the rest is for gas and food and such. So $50 an hour as you suggest is way out of the ballpark.

Once you’ve done your five-year plan (to see if you’d still be in business in five years) then you can determine how much in dollars you’d need to start this and how many people you’d need as customers you’d need if you did basic services for them. Try it out and see if you can get that many customers. If not then perhaps your skills as a volunteer would be appreciated more. Don’t name it till you are sure it will fly. Because once it’s named you’d need a license for it and it starts to get expensive.

And when they say research company does that mean like when it was founded, how many stores. I read a story about one customer spending over £40,000 on whisky so if I have chance to drop that in should I?

You just need to know generally what the company does. Sounds like you are talking about a supermarket, so find out how many stores and you can drop that into the conversation ..’I read that you have 2,000 stores..that’s impressive" or ask people what they think of the company and you can tell them that your aunt thinks you are better value tham Tesco for example. Above all seem generally interested and ask questions, Good luck
