Gas company offering a deal?

March 52010

I am the property owner of a house that uses natural gas for heat and for water. The gas company is offering a service of $3.75 a month that if there is a gas line problem on my property they will fix it up to $4000.

I know it’s not much a month but I’ve lived here 5 years and never had an issue (that’s $225). How often do gas line problems occur? Is this a cost efficient service that I should take advantage of?

Pros and cons greatly welcomed!

What a deal! Just another rip off by your public utility. Don’t just tell them no, tell them hell no!!! And make sure that you tell your local and state politicians.
It is like an insurance policy that you seldom, if ever, need. Like the phone company offering you a policy to fix your phone lines in the house if a problem happens. Or buying that extended warrenty on your electronics. Or like buying the bumper to bumper extended warrenty on your new GM truck. These are just tricks to get more money from customers. If you save the money you will have more than enough to fix any problem that may occur.
However, if you are digging in your yard to the depth the gas line and other utilities are buryed, make sure that you call Miss Dig and do not damage the lines. Also, make sure that whatever contractor that may be doing digging on your property has insurance in case he does damage utility lines.

What they are offering is an insurance policy. The odds are with them that you will not use their service. If your fuel lines are currently not leaking, odds are that they won’t unless you or someone attempts to alter them. Your lines have a pipe dope on the threads that prevent them from leaking. Very rarely do the lines leak if they have been installed properly which yours apparently have over 5 years ago.

That would be something you have to think about. If there ever was a problem then it would have been worth it as you already know.I cooked and heated in ohio with natural gas and paid 10 monthly for the cover of repairs if any had to be done. The Gas was a well so the gas was free.If you can afford to pay 3.75 i might do that

If you have a newer home, NO!!!!!!!!
If an old home, say 50 years. May be a good deal. If the gas pipes are old and starting to rust or corrode. It may be a good deal.

Honestly..thats like the water company offering to insure you water pipes. It sounds ridiculous!! How often to water pipes break other than when frozen? never…same thing with gas…Only gas wont freeze!!! I have never ever known anyone at all that has had a problem with the gas lines..it’s either going to be the hot water tank, furnace, dryer, or stove that will break. Gas lines don’t break. To me this is another scam from the gas companies…they are raping us at the pump and now trying to reach us through our own gal lines in our home!! How scary is that?? DON’T DO IT!!! That’s my final answer…

if a new house & you have a plastic under ground gas line…… they will be planting you ( no matter what age ) before you collect on this policy!

if you ever have a problem ( leak )…between your house & the meter call a plumber, invest in a crescent wrench so you can turn off the gas supply at the meter! from the meter to your house is yours, from the meter to the main is theirs
