The Company of Wolves (Part 10/10)

January 132010

Director Neil Jordan (”The Crying Game,” “Interview with the Vampire”) has a well-earned reputation for lushly photographed films with arresting and evocative themes. “The Company of Wolves” is his imaginative reworking of “Little Red Riding Hood” as a wonderfully wicked fairy tale for adults. Angela Carter adapted the screenplay from her own short story.
The story unfolds as young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) lies dreaming in her bed. A violent nightmare transports her back in time to a world of primeval forests and werewolves. In this netherworld she learns her only sister has been killed by a wolf. Her Granny (Angela Lansbury) weaves vivid tales of folklore and fantasy with warnings of fantastic beasts that lurk within men and foretelling the fate of all young girls who stray from the path.
“The Company of Wolves” is a unique excursion into horror–bathed in sensual imagery, punctuated with nightmarish special effects, and destined to become a modern cult classic.

In my opinion, “The Company of Wolves” is the best werewolf movie ever made, and one of the best Fantasy movies from the ’80s.

Little Girls this seems to say, never stop along the way, never trust a stranger friend, no one knows where it will end, as your pretty so be wise, danger lurks in every guise, now as then this simple truth, sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth.
    how true!

Oh i get it now, …
Oh i get it now, the film is vague and pointless enough to allow people to conceive their own meaning. Personally i think the film was absolute nonsense, hoever perhaps that is because i was not trying to look for meaning, symbolism or metaphors (there is enough of that in REAL life)..I just wanted to be entertained which never happened.

    So long innocent, …
    So long innocent, simple childhood.

Hello dangerous, sexually charged, violent adulthood.

    @madsketcher: You” …
@madsketcher: You”re welcome :) This Movie is intruiging and strong because of its rich symbolism. The wolves at the end could also symbolise fear of sexuality/sex drive. They can also symbolise the harsh reality of the adult world, merging and eventually destroying the careless world of a child.
You can ‘read’ it so many ways. This movie really is a masterpiece!

    Thanks for pointing …
Thanks for pointing out the “tummy ache” thing – that went over my head but it makes sense. I felt that the wolves killing Rosaleen (symbolically?) at the end was because she was menstruating and they could smell it. Interesting!

I think interview with the vampire was sooooo much better. Though I do understand the metaphor…its wasn’t that great of a movie in my opinion.

Also, notice how she kind of “moans” during that scene just before it turns into scream. Maybe it’s just my filthy imagination but taking film’s main subject I believe it’s very suggestive ;)

    I also like to …
I also like to imagine the breaking window is the girl’s hymen, and the wolf is.. well, I’m sure you get it ;P

  12. fayansiarz Says:

    To all the people …
To all the people who are confused – have you ever heard of metaphores and symbolism? Were you sleeping during literature classes? Seriously, WTF?! We’re fed with them from the very childhood thru fairy tales. Read between the lines, don’t read so directly and you might get the film. wolves = men = wake of the sexuality = loss of innocence = adultery. Christ, I think you’d have to see a wolf turning into male and the outta this poor girl to get the ending.
