The Company of Wolves (Part 1/10)
November 12009
Director Neil Jordan (”The Crying Game,” “Interview with the Vampire”) has a well-earned reputation for lushly photographed films with arresting and evocative themes. “The Company of Wolves” is his imaginative reworking of “Little Red Riding Hood” as a wonderfully wicked fairy tale for adults. Angela Carter adapted the screenplay from her own short story.
The story unfolds as young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) lies dreaming in her bed. A violent nightmare transports her back in time to a world of primeval forests and werewolves. In this netherworld she learns her only sister has been killed by a wolf. Her Granny (Angela Lansbury) weaves vivid tales of folklore and fantasy with warnings of fantastic beasts that lurk within men and foretelling the fate of all young girls who stray from the path.
“The Company of Wolves” is a unique excursion into horror–bathed in sensual imagery, punctuated with nightmarish special effects, and destined to become a modern cult classic.
In my opinion, “The Company of Wolves” is the best werewolf movie ever made, and one of the best Fantasy movies from the ’80s.

can anyone post the extended trailer from the region 1 dvd (the one where Rosaleen states her age, and other deleted bits)?
one of my favorite films, by the way – so antmospheric, and beautiful, and haunting.

I have always loved …
I have always loved Angela Carter and first read this story which is from the anthology ‘The Bloody Chamber’ when i was about 15. The first time I saw this film I couldn’t get past the bit where the man returns to his wife after disappearing on their wedding night. I was terrified of that bit!
I adore this film – it’s brilliant.

If you actually …
If you actually read the ‘Company of Wolves’ short story written by Angela Carter, you will be so freaked out. It truly is weird and wrong and just the whole principal is gross. The way she writes it as well makes it even more horrifying. Eurgh. I had to read it for English and talk about it… bad times :S

True. And if people …
True. And if people look further back, many fairy tales told to kids were ‘adult’ like. Mostly to scare the out of them, but still…. The stories collected by the Brothers Grimm is a good example of that.

Read the story …
Read the story first. They’re quite different in telling the story but you’ll most likely be confused if you don’t read the story first.

It was a very good …
It was a very good movie at its time, providing a very unusual viewing experience,
Since I haven’t seen it in many years, though, I’d be hard pressed in giving it a fair rating right now.
It might seem unspectacular in comparison to today’s movie standards. Movies have evolved a lot since the 80s
In the 80s/early 90s I may have given it a 9.

Fair enough.
I …
Fair enough.
I just wanted to point out that the horror elements in this movie can be a disturbing experience for an unsuspecting teenager.
And the term “fairy tale” might be misleading, at least to some people.

oh I just wanted to …
oh I just wanted to make sure before I watch this…and out of 10 what rating would you give this? because I’m picky about movies now

The tag of Fairy …
The tag of Fairy Tale should not just be associated with children things, there are plenty adult fairy tales.

Absolutely *not* …
Absolutely *not* for children.
I assume with parental guidance and if you’re quite confident about the mental maturity of your children, it might be ok for ages 13+
But I would certainly recommend watching the movie before showing it even to teenagers.
The whole concept of the movie (symbolism, etc.) is directed at a mature audience.
The term “fairy tale” only applies because it was based on some. Back in the 80s this movie was sorted under fantasy/*horror*.
