The Company of Wolves (Part 4/10)
March 152010
Director Neil Jordan (”The Crying Game,” “Interview with the Vampire”) has a well-earned reputation for lushly photographed films with arresting and evocative themes. “The Company of Wolves” is his imaginative reworking of “Little Red Riding Hood” as a wonderfully wicked fairy tale for adults. Angela Carter adapted the screenplay from her own short story.
The story unfolds as young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) lies dreaming in her bed. A violent nightmare transports her back in time to a world of primeval forests and werewolves. In this netherworld she learns her only sister has been killed by a wolf. Her Granny (Angela Lansbury) weaves vivid tales of folklore and fantasy with warnings of fantastic beasts that lurk within men and foretelling the fate of all young girls who stray from the path.
“The Company of Wolves” is a unique excursion into horror–bathed in sensual imagery, punctuated with nightmarish special effects, and destined to become a modern cult classic.
In my opinion, “The Company of Wolves” is the best werewolf movie ever made, and one of the best Fantasy movies from the ’80s.

Yes, Granny told …
Yes, Granny told her priest’s bastards were the worst, they meet the devil in the forest. This contrasts with the portrayal of the priest and the nature of his transgression in Rosaleen’s tale of the wounded she-wolf later on.

She’s told her …
She’s told her Granny is filling her with a one-sided fear of men: ‘…if there’s a beast in men, it meets its match in women too’
Rosaleen progresses from stealing her sister’s lipstick (to mimic maturity), and dreaming of fearful old wives’ tales, to internalising her mother’s advice about her own fascination and desire.
The dream portrays Rosaleen as a seductive driver introducing the young boy to a mysterious figure of power, whose potion embroils the boy in the forest.

@kiankelly In this …
@kiankelly In this case, the serpent is symbolic. This is, after all, a dream, and it is meant to be surreal. Technically, a girl is being tempted by the adult world, which includes the knowledge of evil… and there’s a serpent following her around through the greenery. Gee, what could that represent?
And since it’s a fairy tale, it has the biggest serpent possible, even if it doesn’t make zoological sense.

Yeah! Lol! Who’d have known that this forest was in the wilds of South America? I find it amusing when animals pop up in films where they really shouldn’t be! I was also amazed whilst watching a film lately where there was a guy having his leg amputated to prevent the spread of venom from a boa bite! (wtf?)
