The Company of Wolves (Part 5/10)

March 182010

Director Neil Jordan (”The Crying Game,” “Interview with the Vampire”) has a well-earned reputation for lushly photographed films with arresting and evocative themes. “The Company of Wolves” is his imaginative reworking of “Little Red Riding Hood” as a wonderfully wicked fairy tale for adults. Angela Carter adapted the screenplay from her own short story.
The story unfolds as young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) lies dreaming in her bed. A violent nightmare transports her back in time to a world of primeval forests and werewolves. In this netherworld she learns her only sister has been killed by a wolf. Her Granny (Angela Lansbury) weaves vivid tales of folklore and fantasy with warnings of fantastic beasts that lurk within men and foretelling the fate of all young girls who stray from the path.
“The Company of Wolves” is a unique excursion into horror–bathed in sensual imagery, punctuated with nightmarish special effects, and destined to become a modern cult classic.

In my opinion, “The Company of Wolves” is the best werewolf movie ever made, and one of the best Fantasy movies from the ’80s.

    Read the “Scarlet …
    Read the “Scarlet Letter”. It explains how getting raped would have been an unmarried womans fault just as much as if she agreed to the sex. the authorities didn’t much care back in the day. Wouldn’t matter if she was twelve or thirty. And if she was too young to be pregnant then it prolly wouldn’t matter to anyone. Don’t assign modern thinking to people who lived a long time ago. It doesn’t work.

    The red is a symbol …
    The red is a symbol of menstruation or rather puberty in the ORIGINAL story. It was always a part of the story. Its a caution to avoid men in the woods(or any private place)because you could get knocked up before marriage once you menstruate and in that case you would be branded an adulteress in Christian society and be outcast. They didn’t have much care or thought for pedophiles back in the Dark Ages! They didn’t have the concept of raping a woman as opposed to having sex with one.

    @serai7
    I regret to admit but yes, I was thinking the same thing! Me and my corrupt mind!
    But it doesn’t help with the amount of sexual impulses and messages this film gives away!

    i was taling about the original red riding hood. btw: the red cloak was given to the character later, but before that, then this was just a folktale, there was no red cloak in the story.

  12. kiankelly Says:

    @unkaodya No, there …
    @unkaodya No, there is definitely something in there about mensturation! The red cloak is a sign; As are the eggs. And the stork. The boy has been given testosterone in the last part so he too is maturing.

    @KendraEMoyer i …
    @KendraEMoyer i thoughtr it was more about avoiding pedophiles. that`s why mothers told it to little children, not teenagers. the moral is : don`t talk to strangers. not “you will menstruate, get over it”.
